Like many court reporters, I worked in other fields before enrolling in a court reporter training program at the local community college. After earning my bachelor’s at the University of Oregon in geography, I went to work for the City of Coos Bay for several years in their land use department. Following my return to Eugene, I joined the staff at Worker’s Trust, an association of self-employed and employee-owned business, where I headed up the national marketing department for the association’s health insurance program. When the association closed their doors, court reporting was suggested by my mother who, on a whim, had just purchased a steno machine at a garage sale. Thank goodness I listened to her! It’s been a fascinating and gratifying career, both as a staff court reporter and now as a business manager and partner.
But as every good court reporter knows, it’s important to leave transcripts behind on occasion. When I do, my first choice is to play piano for ballet class at a dance studio where my daughter grew up followed by chasing the grandson around the yard!
